Principles of Anatomy and Physiology is published by Wiley and Company. Wiley and Company is noted for its publications of college level texts. The fact that this text is in its is testament to quality and content of the information it provides.
Wiley and Company has offices worldwide in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Several Noble Prize Laureates have published under the Wiley franchise.
Principles of Anatomy and Physiology Tortora was written by Gerard J Tortora, Ph.D. and Bryan H. Derrickson Ph.D. Gerard J Tortora is Professor of Biology at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. Bryan H. Derrickson is Professor of Biology at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida. To say that they are a powerhouse in the field of Anatomy and Physiology is an understatement. Gerard J Tortora has authored and co-authored some 120 publications and multi media. Tortora and Derrickson have worked together on dozens of publications that include texts, manuals, access cards, tests and audio- visual materials. Both are members of several associations and societies in the field of Anatomy and Physiology.
The nature of the content in Anatomy and Physiology requires substantial memorization. Much of this material is inside the human body and cannot be seen. These two factors make it extremely difficult to master the content. The human body is exceeding complex in describing body organs, body systems and body functions. The only way to facilitate learning in this discipline is to use multi media. Wiley has done a superb job of presenting concepts in several different media and techniques. They use flash cards, videos and hundreds of visuals with descriptions of how a particular organ or system functions. The authors, Tortora and Derrickson, have woven repetition seamlessly with practice questions and tests throughout.
The text is divided into five major units: Organization of the Human Body, Principles of Support and Movement, Control Systems of the Human Body, Maintenance of the Human Body and Continuity.(Wiley)
These five units are further broken down into 29 chapters. A look at one of these chapters shows how the use of media is presented. Let’s take one example: The Chemical Level of Organization. It is broken down into the following activities:
Biology Newsletter
Normal values for Selected Blood and Urine Tests
Periodic Table
Interactions Activity Sheets
Real Anatomy Activity Sheets
Mastering Vocabulary Flash Cards
Power Phys, 2.0 Module II Homeostatic Imbalances of Thyroid
